Recipe: Crock pot Italian meat sauce

Using my crock pot can be such an ordeal. I have to move 3 other pots and 2 baking dishes just to exhume it from the depths of my kitchen cabinets. But for make-ahead meals during a busy week, you just can't beat it. And coming home after a matinee movie to the comforting aroma of homemade Italian meat sauce wafting from the kitchen? Ah-mazing!

Check out the recipe!

New local, sustainable market in Buena Vista

Farmers markets are one of the best places to find gluten free goodies. Fresh produce, eggs, meat, dairy straight from the farm? How can you beat that? Check out the news from Smitty's Notes. I highly recommend the Goat Lady's chocolate truffles.

Reynolda Fresh Market opening in the Buena Vista neighborhood.

Opening in the Buena Vista area is a new fresh market in the neighborhood. The Reynolda Fresh Market will be located at 1206 Reynolda Rd at the former Pink Mink boutique and the popular Krankie’s Airstream coffee drive thru. The proprietors of the fresh market are Katherine Lassiter, MaryLynn Ackerman and Frank Blankenship, Sr.

They will feature a host of locally grown fresh produce; some will be organic or sustainable. Eggs, meats and products from Homeland Dairy, The Goat Lady Cheese, Ollie’s Bakery, fudges, “old school” hard candy and much more. A soft opening is planned for Saturday, July 18 th and open for business the following week. A grand opening will be later in July as more products arrive. The Reynolda Fresh Market hours will be Monday-Saturday 7:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Telephone: 777-3421

Recipe: Gluten-free white chocolate key lime pie

What's more refreshing in the summer than the crisp tartness of key lime? White chocolate? Even better! And who can resist a dollop of homemade whipped cream on top? This is a family favorite for the gluten-intolerant and gluten-tolerant alike. The filling for this recipe is adapted from Coastal Living to be both gluten free and lower in fat.

Study: Celiac disease rates up 400%

New study results from Mayo clinic show that Celiac disease rates are 4 times higher than rates of 50 years ago. While the research study is interesting and the results are astonishing, I can't help but wonder if (and I was thinking this even before I read the last paragraph) that processed foods - often containing gluten - have become a crutch for our on-the-go, convenience-dependent society. I also wonder if the increase in awareness and research (though we still have a long way to go) of Celiac disease in the medical field and in general has boosted the number of diagnoses.

What are your thoughts?

Recipe: No-bake gluten free granola bars

Is there a certain food that you long for, that you miss? For me, it's granola bars. Even before my gluten intolerance, I searched high and low for a balanced granola bar recipe - not too sugary, not too bland. This recipe is easy to make, eco-friendly (no oven required), delicious, and healthy to boot. Eat it for breakfast, snack, or even dessert. It's portable and keeps well in the fridge or in your purse, book bag, or briefcase.
